HOW TO BUILD A RAISED GARDEN BED
Give your garden a boost—literally. This guide shows you how to build a simple raised garden bed using basic tools and materials, perfect for growing veggies, herbs, or flowers with less mess and better drainage.
Tools & Materials
💡 Tip: Avoid pressure-treated wood for veggie beds—stick with rot-resistant untreated lumber.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Choose a Location
- Pick a flat, sunny spot with good drainage.
- Clear away grass, rocks, or debris.
Step 2: Measure and Cut Your Boards
- Decide your bed’s size (e.g., 4 ft x 8 ft).
- Cut two boards for the long sides and two for the short sides.
Step 3: Pre-Drill and Assemble the Frame
- Pre-drill holes in the boards to prevent splitting.
- Use deck screws to fasten corners together—two screws per joint minimum.
- Use a level to ensure the frame sits square and even.
Step 4: (Optional) Install Corner Brackets
- For extra strength, attach metal brackets inside each corner.
Step 5: Line the Bottom with Fabric
- Lay landscape fabric inside the frame to block weeds while allowing drainage.
- Trim to fit the shape of your bed.
Step 6: Fill with Soil
- Fill with a mix of compost, topsoil, and organic matter.
- Leave a few inches at the top to prevent overflow when watering.
Step 7: Plant Your Garden
- Plant your herbs, flowers, or veggies and water thoroughly.
- Step back and admire your new growing space!
Pro Tips
Make the bed no wider than 4 feet so you can reach the center from either side.
Leave space between beds for a wheelbarrow if making multiples.
Consider rabbit wire or hardware cloth underneath if pests are an issue.
